Whitefish Bay Is a Bird City!
The Whitefish Bay Garden Club led the effort to earn the Bird City designation for our village, with community support from the Civic Foundation and the Village Board. On March 22, 2012, the Village of Whitefish Bay became a qualified member of Bird City Wisconsin. This distinction “recognizes and supports communities committed to bird conservation and environmental stewardship.” It recognizes our green spaces and natural conservation efforts, part of the village’s “Smart Growth” plan.
One important goal of the Bird City initiative is to improve declining bird populations by helping individuals create bird-friendly habitats in their own backyards. The club ensures that our annual programming includes information to facilitate this (e.g., Caring for Birds in the Winter, Birdscaping in the Midwest, Native Plants for Small Spaces).
We design and maintain our community gardens in ways that protect and provide bird habitat and food sources. We observe and promote World Migratory Bird Day, celebrated on the second Saturday in May (Spring migration) and the second Saturday in October (Fall migration). We also work with the village annually to provide necessary documentation to renew Whitefish Bay’s Bird City Designation. This makes our village a healthier place for both birds and humans to live!
